  2. Why is the church called Sylvania?

Honestly, we are not entirely sure.  One theory is that the church's original location on East Fifth Street had a number of trees on it and, since Sylvania means "wooded area," it was selected as a name.  The second theory is that one of the church's founding members (May, 1946) had moved to Tyler from Sylvania, Georgia.  Apparently, this member thought so fondly of his former home that he recommended the church be called Sylvania

We recognize that Sylvania is not your normal, run-of-the-mill church name.  However, we like that.  We're not likely to be confused with other churches in our area, and the unusual name is a great conversation-starter leading to the really important things -- a big God and the gift of His Son.

  5. How do I begin a relationship with Jesus?

We’re glad you clicked on this link because the reality about Jesus Christ is the very foundation of Sylvania Church. In fact, if you could summarize what we’re about in just one word, it would be “Jesus.” We’ve found a great presentation that summarizes why we think Jesus is so great and how you might also experience His greatness through an authentic relationship with Him. Written by Pastor John Piper, it is called “Quest for Joy,” and we invite you to click the link below to check it out. Once you’ve read it, give us a call or stop by the office and let us know what you think. We’d love to hear from you! Enjoy your reading!
