About Boys’ Home Outreach.

In November of 2009, the Lord moved in the hearts of Sylvania members to take the breath and life of God which had been so graciously breathed into our own lives to those who were without our spectacular hope. Ten teams of eight people each blanketed Tyler with the love and encouragement of Jesus Christ in an all-day event. Dubbed the “Matthew 25 Outreach,” we sought to be faithful to the Scripture which encourages us to love the least of these, for in so doing we love Christ Himself.

When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. The the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them,’Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’ (Mt. 25:31-40)

As the day of ministry to various portions of Tyler drew to a close, the last visit for one of the teams was an “accident.” They were not suppose to end up where they did. It was a last-minute change due to an unexpected (and unwelcome, at the time) cancellation on the part of a host mission site. A little dejected, they headed to Youth & Family Enrichment Center on Highway 155 South. It was a hasty solution and unplanned so they didn’t know what to expect.

Within five minutes after their arrival, one of the team members found her nephews who had been in the state system for five years. She thought they had been adopted out and were residing in another state. Everyone was surprised, taken aback, and marveling at the providence of God that led them there.

After further considering God’s commands regarding caring for orphans (James 1:27), we became convinced that this was a mission opportunity we should pursue, and when doors opened wide for continued ministry possibilities, the Boys’ Home Outreach was born. A team of Sylvania Church members have come to adore the troubled boys of Youth & Family and have sought on a weekly basis to love the boys with the matchless love of God by attempting to meet their deep physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

We have seen God transform the lives of many boys, snatching them from the pit of despair, which had been their life-long home. They have not only made professions of faith, but are also evidencing the life-change that accords with genuine repentance. Many have made such significant improvement they have been reduced to a lower level of care and are allowed to enter the more hopeful homes of awaiting foster parents. Heart change like this is only possible by the powerful hand of God.

And we are amazed that for whatever reason, God chooses to work through fallen, sinful humans. This ministry is experiencing the joy of being used as a clay pot, pouring out the abundance of what we have been given in Christ, and we would love for you to be a part of it. If you are interested in being part of what God is doing through the members of Sylvania Church at Youth & Family, please see one of the team members or ask someone in the church office about this ministry opportunity. Even if you are only able to attend once a month for a few hours, as long as your attendance is consistent, the boys will respond deeply to the love they are shown.
